Jack Draper makes 'weird' admission as Brit explains what sets him apart

Jack Draper: Rising Star Clinches Indian Wells Title, Eyes Miami Open Glory

Jack Draper has long been heralded as a potential future star in men’s tennis. Many within the sport, including rivals and tour colleagues, consistently identify him as a player to watch. His ascent has been steady, highlighted by securing two tournament victories in 2024.

Indian Wells Masters Triumph

The 23-year-old elevated his performance to a new level at Indian Wells, culminating in winning the prestigious Masters 1000 championship. While Draper’s victory was anticipated by some, the commanding manner in which he achieved it was particularly impressive.

Path to Victory

During the tournament, the British player demonstrated his skill and resilience by overcoming a series of formidable opponents:

  • Joao Fonseca: Defeated the emerging teenage talent in his opening match.
  • Jenson Brooksby: Triumphed over the former world No. 33, who is returning after a two-year absence.
  • Taylor Fritz: Overcame the highly-ranked American player.
  • Ben Shelton: Secured a victory against another top American competitor.
  • Carlos Alcaraz: Defeated the world-renowned and highly-rated Spaniard.
  • Holger Rune: Triumphed over the top-10 player to claim the title.

Notably, Fritz, Shelton, Alcaraz, and Rune are all ranked within the top 15 globally, and three of them have previously achieved Masters 1000 titles.

The Left-Handed Factor

A key asset for the British No. 1 is his left-handed playing style. Despite being naturally right-handed, Draper offered an intriguing explanation for adopting a left-handed grip when playing tennis.

“Yes, it provides an advantage,” Draper acknowledged in an interview with the ATP leading up to the Miami Open. “Many people inquire about it, questioning ‘How did that happen?’ or remarking ‘That’s quite unusual’.” He added with a touch of humour, “And I honestly don’t know the answer. I just tell them I’m a bit of an unusual guy. That’s the simple truth.”

Setting Sights on the Sunshine Double

Draper now aims to extend his success into the Miami Open. Following his Indian Wells victory, the newly ranked world No. 7 is vying for the coveted ‘Sunshine Double’ – winning both Indian Wells and Miami Masters tournaments consecutively.

The British player has a direct entry into the second round of the Miami Open, where his first opponent will be either Roberto Bautista Agut or Jakub Mensik.

Ambitions Beyond Indian Wells

Draper is eager to build upon his strong California performance. “I recognise there is still a long journey ahead of me,” he stated. “My ambitions are high. I don’t intend to stop here; I am determined to continue progressing and achieving more.”
