EU decides to massively expand defence by 2030 as Russia looms

EU to Significantly Increase Defence Spending Amid Russia Threat

The European Union is set to substantially increase its defence expenditure, aiming to mobilize €800 billion ($868 billion) over the next four years. This initiative includes €150 billion in loans designated for armament projects and temporary exemptions from EU debt regulations for defence investments.

EU Leaders Agree on Enhanced Defence Capabilities

During a summit held in Brussels on Thursday, EU leaders reached a consensus to implement all necessary measures to bolster Europe’s defence capabilities by 2030, according to multiple diplomatic sources.

Support for Ukraine Military Efforts

This intensified effort is also designed to amplify military assistance for Ukraine as it continues to resist the ongoing Russian invasion.

Concerns over Potential Large-Scale Conflict

The significant surge in defence spending arises from increasing apprehension within the European Commission. There is a growing sentiment that the EU must urgently prepare for a potential large-scale confrontation with Russia.

Warning of Future Russian Aggression

In a document presented prior to the summit, the Commission conveyed a stark warning, stating that history would not excuse European leaders for inaction. The paper argued that should Russia achieve its objectives in Ukraine, Moscow would likely pursue further territorial ambitions, possibly before the end of the decade.
