Argentina’s CGT Union Announces General Strike Against Milei’s Austerity
BUENOS AIRES – Argentina’s most significant labor confederation, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), has declared a 24-hour nationwide strike set for April 10. This industrial action is in response to President Javier Milei’s economic austerity policies and reforms.
Union Protests Economic Policies
President Milei’s administration has successfully curbed Argentina’s exceptionally high inflation. However, labor unions argue that the government’s reductions in public expenditure have resulted in job losses and diminished consumer buying power.
Rising Joblessness a Key Concern
Hector Daer, the CGT’s secretary-general, emphasized that increasing unemployment will be a central issue of the strike. “We cannot simply stand by and watch as layoffs occur,” Daer stated.
Third Strike Against Milei Administration
This upcoming strike marks the third instance of organized labor action against Milei’s government. The CGT has historical ties to the Peronist movement, now in opposition.
Government Dismisses Strike Justification
Presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni previously stated on Thursday that “there is no justification for a strike.” Adorni further claimed that union leaders are attempting to “undermine the government.”
