This is why the Minecraft movie is called A Minecraft Movie

Initial Reactions to “A Minecraft Movie” Title

Upon viewing the initial trailer for A Minecraft Movie, two immediate thoughts arose. Firstly, a sense of disbelief that my colleagues at PC Gamer assigned me this article. Secondly, a question regarding the title: why “A Minecraft Movie” instead of “The Minecraft Movie,” given its status as the definitive Minecraft cinematic adaptation?

Rationale Behind the Title

There is, in fact, a rationale behind the title, which possesses a degree of logic. As Mary Parent, Chairman of Worldwide Production at Legendary Entertainment, explained to Variety, “We’re calling it ‘A Minecraft Movie’ because we’re respecting the fact that there’s no singular narrative that defines the game.”

Director Jared Hess on Non-Canon Approach

Jared Hess, the director helming A Minecraft Movie, echoed this sentiment. “We’re not canonizing anything,” Hess stated. “We’re just one of countless stories within the Minecraft universe.”

Minecraft’s Open Narrative Structure and Movie Justification

While this justification might appear to be a post-hoc rationalization, it aligns with the inherent narrative structure of Minecraft, which is deliberately open-ended. Even Steve, an iconic figure in videogame history, received his name somewhat arbitrarily. Therefore, conceptualizing Minecraft as a multiverse of infinite possibilities, with this movie representing just one iteration, lends credence to the title “A Minecraft Movie.”

Jack Black’s Portrayal of Steve: One of Many

This non-canonical approach extends to the portrayal of Steve by Jack Black. Black embodies Steve, but as one version amongst many. Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Senior Director of Original Content at Mojang, revealed that Black’s character was initially conceived as a talking pig, transitioning to Steve only late in development to fulfill the role of an “expert and host.” Thus, Jack Black’s Steve, similar to the film itself, is not intended to be definitive but rather a Steve within the wider Minecraft universe.

Jack Black’s Interpretation of Steve

Ólafsson elaborated, “This is not ‘my’ Steve or ‘your’ Steve—this is Jack Black’s Steve.” He noted fan reactions to early teasers and trailers, where some perceived Black’s portrayal as simply “Jack Black being Jack Black.” Ólafsson suggests this might be intentional, stating, “because this is literally him interpreting this character and what it means to him.”

Jack Black’s Dedicated Approach to the Role

While some might contend that Jack Black’s on-screen persona remains consistent across roles, reports indicate he approached this role with dedication. According to Variety, Black adopted a “full Method” approach on set. Furthermore, Ólafsson detailed how Black engaged intensely with Minecraft, clocking over 100 hours in the game after Xbox consoles and private servers were set up for the cast and crew – a significant commitment considering his filming schedule.

Mixed Reactions and Anticipation

The ultimate reception of this approach remains to be seen. PC Gamer’s Morgan Park expressed some concerns, stating that the film’s villagers “look like what I imagine Hell is,” a potentially unfavorable visual for promotional materials. Conversely, PC Gamer’s Chris Livingston predicted immense financial success, suggesting “A Minecraft Movie will make A Trillion Dollars,” albeit with a humorous caveat that Warner Bros. could have achieved similar results by simply having Jack Black stream Minecraft gameplay. This highlights a spectrum of opinions regarding the film’s direction and potential.

Upcoming Release and Jason Momoa’s Role

A Minecraft Movie is scheduled for release in US cinemas on April 4th. The film also features Jason Momoa, whose role remains a point of curiosity for some.
