“Snow White” Remake: Prince Character Redefined Amidst Controversy
The upcoming “Snow White” remake presents a significantly altered portrayal of the Prince character, diverging from the 1937 animated film that attracted criticism. The film, starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White, introduces a new narrative for the character.
A Shift in the Prince’s Role
Andrew Burnap plays Jonathan, Snow White’s love interest in Marc Webb’s movie. Unlike the traditional royal figure, Jonathan is a poor, Robin Hood-esque thief. He leads a group resisting the Evil Queen, portrayed by Gal Gadot, in the film.
This version of the character is not Snow White’s rescuer or destined soulmate, aligning with Zegler’s perspective on the original. Notably, however, the remake retains the traditional “true love’s first kiss” scene.
Controversies Surrounding the Remake
Zegler’s Previous Comments
“Snow White” has faced considerable pre-release scrutiny, including Zegler’s public remarks on the original Disney film.

In 2022, Zegler described the original Prince as a stalker during Disney’s D23 Expo.
- Zegler stated the original film’s focus on the “love story with the guy who literally stalks her” was “weird.”
- She emphasized that the new film would be more “modern” than the “dated” animated version.
However, in a recent interview with Allure, Zegler appeared to soften her previous criticisms.
Zegler explained “Snow White is on her own mission and she falls in love along the way, which is really awesome. You can have it all. It’s all possible. Because you are everything you’ve been wishing and waiting for.”
Burnap’s Perspective on His Character
Burnap echoed this perspective. In 2023, he noted his character is not like the Prince from the classic animated film.
“I would say that Jonathan is less of a full-on prince and more of a reluctant hero. I guess that’s all I can say right now,” he said.
Burnap also highlighted his audition process for the role and expressed excitement about the project, emphasizing the joy of working with Zegler, Gadot, and director Marc Webb.
He added that the new story is not about a princess waiting to be saved, “but a princess waiting to be saved by herself and finding her voice, her strength and her courage and actually, in the end, saving everyone around her.”
Limited Promotional Activities
Following Disney’s decision to scale down its promotional efforts, the “Snow White” cast has participated in limited press engagements.
Instead of a large premiere, the film debuted at a smaller event in Los Angeles on March 15, which was attended by Zegler and Gadot.
Burnap was unable to attend, confirming on X (formerly Twitter) that he was performing in “Othello” on Broadway at the time.
“All my love and thanks to those in LA and around the world who helped bring this to life – what a joy it was to make,” the actor wrote.
