San Bernardino Deputy Killed in High-Speed Chase
A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy died Monday in a high-speed collision that split his patrol vehicle during a pursuit of a suspected car thief, according to official reports.
The Incident
Hector Cuevas Jr., 36, a married father of two, was declared dead at the scene after his patrol car collided with a third vehicle and then struck a light pole.
Sheriff Shannon Dicus shared a heartfelt tribute, calling Cuevas “the type of law enforcement officer that we all want to be.”
“Hector was described as a devoted family man and by his law enforcement partners a cop’s cop who has the ability to go between dealing with the most hard core gang member to turning around and being able to talk to a child and making sure they felt safe and knew that they were protected,” Dicus said during a press conference.

The Pursuit
Deputies identified the stolen vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop around 11 a.m. However, the driver, identified as Ryan Turner, 22, failed to comply, leading to a high-speed pursuit involving at least two police vehicles, the sheriff’s office reported.
Turner eventually stopped the car and fled on foot before being apprehended and arrested.
Charges Expected
Turner is anticipated to face charges including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, evading a peace officer resulting in death or serious injury.
Further details regarding the circumstances preceding the crash will be revealed following an ongoing investigation, Sheriff Dicus stated.
Images from the scene, released by KABC and KCAL, depict Cuevas’ patrol vehicle split in two, with one section alongside the light pole and the other several yards away.
The driver of the third vehicle involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to Dicus.
Remembering Deputy Cuevas
Deputy Cuevas is survived by his wife, two children, parents, brother, and sister.
Authorities are expected to request that Turner be denied bail during a forthcoming court hearing.
