Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza Result in Fatalities

Details of the Attacks

At least five individuals were killed in two distinct Israeli airstrikes that took place on Monday in central Gaza, according to Palestinian reports.

In one instance, the Israeli military stated that its forces struck “three terrorists” who were “attempting to plant an explosive device” in the vicinity of Israeli troops in central Gaza. A separate strike in the same area targeted two additional individuals, the military added.

Additionally, the military reported a similar strike in Rafah, southern Gaza.

WAFA, the Palestinian news agency, indicated that a number of people were wounded in the attacks.

Ongoing Conflict and Ceasefire Status

These attacks come despite a fragile ceasefire agreement established in January between Israel and Hamas. Negotiations to extend the truce have thus far been unsuccessful.

Background of the Conflict

The conflict commenced on October 7, 2023, when Hamas and other extremist groups launched an assault on Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the taking of over 250 hostages.

Since the beginning of the war, the Hamas-run health authority in Gaza has reported 48,572 deaths, including significant numbers of women and children. These figures, which do not differentiate between combatants and civilians, cannot be independently verified. Israel estimates it has killed around 20,000 militants.
