Crystal Palace Sporting Director Dougie Freedman Departs, Poised for Saudi Arabia Move
Crystal Palace has announced that Dougie Freedman has stepped down from his role as sporting director. The former Scotland international is expected to take up a position with a club recently promoted from Saudi Arabia’s third tier.
Freedman’s Departure
In a surprising development, Palace revealed on Monday evening that Freedman was leaving with immediate effect to “take up a role overseas.” It is understood that he is set to become sporting director of Al-Diriyah. The team has been playing in Saudi Arabia’s second division, but secured promotion as champions after the season concluded.
Key Points:
- Overseas Opportunity: Freedman is departing to take up a role abroad.
- Al-Diriyah: He is expected to join Al-Diriyah as sporting director.
- Ownership: Al-Diriyah’s ownership was transferred to the Diriyah Company, owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Background
Freedman was previously close to joining Newcastle United—also part-owned by PIF—last year but was convinced by Palace’s chairman, Steve Parish, to remain at Selhurst Park. Despite his involvement in the appointment of manager Oliver Glasner, the 50-year-old is believed to have been frustrated by budget limitations during the January transfer window.
Before his role as sporting director, Freedman had two spells as a player. He also served as manager in 2011, leaving in controversial circumstances a year later to join Bolton.
Statement from Crystal Palace Chairman
“Dougie has been instrumental in everything we have done over the past eight years and indeed had a huge impact before that as manager and, of course, as a player,” said Parish. “I have enjoyed working with him immensely and wish him every success for the future. Dougie leaves behind an excellent and well-structured sporting department that I’m sure will continue to go from strength to strength.”

Freedman’s Legacy
Freedman is credited with identifying and bringing in players such as Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, and Adam Wharton from the Championship after his appointment as sporting director in 2017.
Freedman’s Farewell
“I would like to extend my thanks to Steve Parish, the other owners and to all the staff, managers and players who have been at the club during my time here. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed learning from and working alongside you all,” Freedman stated.
Future Outlook
“To be leaving the club with a squad full of exciting talent led by an excellent manager, I truly believe the foundations are in place to be built upon.”
