Draper Drawn: Brit Seeks Double Delight at Miami Open

Jack Draper to Compete at Miami Open After Indian Wells Victory

Following his remarkable triumph at Indian Wells, Jack Draper is set to participate in the Miami Open this week. His first opponent will be either Roberto Bautista Agut or Jakub Mensik.

Draper’s Path to the Miami Open

Draper, seeded for the Miami Open, received a bye and avoids the initial round. He secured his first Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells, defeating Holger Rune 6-2, 6-2. The Briton now aims to further his success by winning a second Masters 1000 title at the Miami Open. The winner of the Bautista Agut-Mensik match will face this 23-year-old tennis player.

Indian Wells Success and Momentum

Draper’s path to victory in California included notable wins against Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, and Taylor Fritz. He lost only one set throughout the tournament, widely considered the most significant event outside of the four Grand Slam tournaments. This led to his ascent to No. 7 in the ATP Tour world rankings, providing crucial momentum for the upcoming spring and summer seasons.

Reflecting on his Indian Wells win, Draper shared his perspective:

“It’s incredible. I wasn’t expecting this. I’ve put in a lot of work over time. I’m just so grateful and so happy to be out here to be able to play, my body feeling healthy, to feel great in the mind. Just all the work I’ve done over the last few years, it feels like it’s coming together on the big stage and I can’t put that into words.

I felt like I came out, I approached the match well,” said Draper. “Yesterday, I had a few ups and downs during the [semi-final against Alcaraz], a bit low energy against Carlos and I kind of learned from that today.

“I knew Holger was going to come out and play some really good tennis. So I needed to be aggressive and play to win from the first ball and I did an amazing job of that. I didn’t allow him to play. I felt like I dictated the match really well.”

Miami Open Competition

Leading the Miami Open as the top seed is Alexander Zverev, benefiting from the three-month suspension of World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Zverev will face either Benjamin Bonzi or a qualifier. • Katie Boulter will face Peyton Stearns.
