Boiled eggs turn out 'perfect' if you cook them for exact amount of time

Most people enjoy tucking into a delicious boiled  egg. Whether you prefer a hard or soft yolk, they always go down a treat. After all, they can jazz up breakfast, lunch and even dinner in some instances.

But, even though they’re super tasty, they can be quite tricky to make. It’s a cooking task that some people simply find hard to master.

Luckily for us, we have an expert chef on hand to teach us exactly how to get it right. He exclusively revealed the secret to making the “perfect” boiled egg.

Tom Shepherd, a Michelin-starred chef from Birmingham, shared his top tips with us. The chef, who has over 40,000 followers on Instagram, has cooked for royalty like Prince William and he won the main course round on BBC’s Great British Menu in 2023, so he’s someone we should probably listen to.

Tom said: “Depending on how you like your boiled eggs cooked, I recommend the following times. Six minutes for a runny yolk, eight minutes for a soft yolk and 10 minutes for a hard yolk.

“Once boiled, immediately place the eggs in ice-cold water. If you want the egg to be cool, leave it in the water.

“If you prefer the egg warm, only leave it in the ice water for no more than 30 seconds. This will help stop the residual heat from the shell from continuing to cook the egg.

“When you crack the top, add some seasoning. Personally, I enjoy my eggs cooked for seven minutes, as I like them in between soft and hard.”

How to boil an egg

Generally, to boil an egg properly you need to do a few key things. Start by filling a pot with cold water and bring it to the boil.

Then you can drop your eggs in and cook them to your desired level of doneness. Everyone likes their eggs differently – some prefer them soft-boiled, while others prefer them hard-boiled.

To work out how long you need to cook them for, it’s good to follow Tom’s guide. Chefs generally recommend that once the time is up, you should pop the eggs into an ice bath to stop the cooking process.

This will ensure they stay as you like them when you tuck into your meal. If you’re keen to learn more about Tom and his tips, check out his website.
