American Airlines Flight 1006 caught fire on the tarmac of Colorado’s Denver International Airport after making an emergency landing on Thursday, March 14, 2025. The flight had taken off from Colorado Springs Airport and was heading toward Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in Texas. The aviation incident is one of many in a string of recent plane crashes, accidents and other commercial and non-commercial flight mishaps that have taken place around the United States since early 2025, which has prompted safety doubts among travelers.

How Did the American Airlines Flight Catch on Fire?

The Federal Aviation Association (FAA) released a statement about the situation, obtained by CBS News, which read, “After landing and while taxiing to the gate an engine caught fire and passengers evacuated the aircraft using the slides.”

According to American Airlines, the plane experienced an “engine-related issue” after it landed and was taxiing toward a gate.

“The 172 customers and six crew members deplaned and are being relocated to the terminal,” the airline’s statement read, per CBS. “We thank our crew members, DEN team and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board and on the ground as the priority.”

Social media erupted with videos of the incident. Many people shared videos of flames and smoke emitting from the plane while passengers evacuated onto a wing of the aircraft.

According to CBS News, 178 people were on board the flight that caught fire. Twelve of the passengers were taken to a hospital nearby to assess their injuries.
