Why Scarlett Johansson doesn’t take photos with fans

Scarlett Johansson doesn’t want to take photos with fans when she’s not working.

The “Black Widow” star revealed she implemented boundaries with passionate fans while she is away from the movie set or an event and trying to “buy my own s–t at Duane Reade.”

“It really offends a lot of people,” Johansson told InStyle magazine. “It doesn’t mean I’m not appreciative, of course, that people are fans, or happy to see me. But I always say to people, ‘I’m not working.’ [And that means] I don’t want to be identified as being in this time and place with you. I’m doing my own thing.”

The two-time Oscar nominee added that she doesn’t want to be “self-conscious” in public while trying to be in her “own thoughts that have nothing to do with what other people think of me.”

Still, the New York native insisted that her life isn’t all a closed book.

Johansson’s husband, “Saturday Night Live’s” Colin Jost, often makes jokes about their marriage on the popular sketch show’s “Weekend Update” segment.

“I am a private person in the sense that I value my close friendships,” Johansson said. “My family is very precious to me, as is their privacy. The anonymity of my children is very precious to me.”

The mother of two shares her daughter, Rose, 10, with ex-husband Romain Dauriac and son Cosmo, 3, with Jost.

She tries to “preserve’ their privacy as much as possible even though her daughter has shown interest in making videos for her famous mom’s clean-beauty startup, The Outset.

“I was talking to my daughter the other day, because she said, ‘Oh, I would love to make videos for The Outset,’” Johansson said. “She was like, ‘Why can’t I?’ And I said, ‘Well, other than the fact that you’re 10…’”

The “Avengers: Endgame” actress then explained why she wants her young kids off-camera.

“The thing about being a public figure is that the idea of being recognizable and celebrated feels fun, but then you can never stuff it back in the bottle,” she said. “The reality of it is, there’s a massive loss to that, you know?”

When the spotlight is on during industry events like movie premieres or gigs, such as appearing on the TODAY show, Johansson shared she’s happy to take photos with fans.

Johansson started acting over thirty years ago and her career got a boost after she starred in films like “Girl with a Pearl Earring” and “Lost in Translation,” both of which earned her Golden Globe nominations in 2003.

The actress was nominated for two Oscars in 2020 for her roles in “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit.”
