Jones, 26, spent last season with the Jaguars after he was traded by the Patriots following Bill Belichick’s dismissal.

As the understudy to Trevor Lawrence, Jones still got into 10 games — starting seven — as Lawrence suffered a concussion and needed season-ending surgery to repair an AC joint injury.

Jones threw for 1,672 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions while going 2-5 as the Jaguars’ starter.

His 39.8 QBR represented his best since his Pro Bowl rookie season in New England.

Jones gives the 49ers some veteran insurance behind Purdy, who was backed up last season by Joshua Dobbs and Brandon Allen, each of whom got one start each.

There was a lot of buzz in the lead-up to the 2021 draft that the 49ers would use their first-round pick on Jones before they traded up for the No. 3 overall pick to select Trey Lance.

Jones eventually fell to the Patriots at No. 15, spending an up-and-down three years with the organization that saw him reach the playoffs once but get benched for Bailey Zappe at points during 2022 and 2023.

Now on his third team in as many years, Jones gets another fresh start.
