Tottenham have been handed another major injury blow after Ange Postecoglou revealed Cristian Romero will be sidelined for up to five weeks with a hamstring strain.

Romero was replaced at half time during Saturday’s 2-1 win against Everton after complaining of muscle discomfort and he was sent for a scan after the game.

The results confirmed that he will be ruled out of Tottenham’s upcoming games, with Postecoglou delivering news of the setback at his press conference on Wednesday.

‘Not so great with Romero. He had a scan and he’s got a hamstring strain. We’re looking at four to five weeks with him,’ he said.

Tottenham face Brighton, Bournemouth, Manchester United and Brentford in the Premier League over the next five weeks, while they are also set to host Burnley in the FA Cup.

Romero’s setback is a bitter blow for Ange Postecoglou as the injuries pile up at Spurs

Romero could miss all five matches, having already been absent for three games this term after serving a suspension for being sent off against Chelsea last month.

He joins a lengthy list of injury absentees at Spurs, with James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur and Ivan Perisic all currently unavailable.

Van De Ven raised hopes when he was recently interviewed at the World Darts Championship that he is nearing a return, but Postecoglou insists he will be cautious with bringing the Dutchman back into the fold despite his centre back partner now also being injured.

‘Where did he say that? Ah the darts,’ Postecoglou said when asked about Van De Ven’s comments.

‘I wouldn’t put too much in what the players say, mate. I don’t think [he’ll be back for] Burnley, maybe for Man United but I wouldn’t know until I see him in training. He’s at the tail end of it now.’

Tottenham are also set to lose more players in the coming weeks with Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations, while club captain Son Heung-min will depart for the Asian Cup.

Postecoglou’s men will return to action without Romero when they travel to Brighton tomorrow looking for their fourth successive win.

A victory would take them level on points with third-placed Aston Villa after their dramatic defeat at Manchester United on Boxing Day, and keep Spurs hot on the heels of Liverpool and Arsenal.
