Who was chauffeur Henri Paul?
Henri Paul was born in Lorient, France, on July 3, 1956, and was one of five boys to a teacher and a municipal worker.
He was educated at the Lyon St Louis School and served in the French military as a security team leader, according to Operation Paget.
Paul received his pilot licence in 1976 and reportedly flew once a month, logging more than 600 hours of flight time as a result.
He had various jobs over the years, including working as a boat salesman and tried to open a private detective agency.
The 41-year-old had also taken four driving courses for Mercedes-Benz cars in Germany in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
He started working for the security department at the Ritz, owned by Mohammed Al Fayed, Dodi’s dad, in 1986.
Paul, who wasn’t employed as a driver for the hotel, was asked around midnight on August 31 to drive Diana and Dodi from the hotel to the latter’s apartment.
He had already picked up the pair from Le Bourget airport earlier that day and took Diana shopping in the afternoon.
Following the horrific incident, a blood analysis from Paul’s post-mortem results found he was three-times over the French drink-drive limit and had traces of antidepressants and anti-psychotic medicines, which could have worsened his state prior to getting behind the wheel.
The inquest also stated that a receipt from the Ritz bar showed he had two Ricards, a French aniseed spirit, while he was waiting for Diana and Dodi.
Barman Alain Willaumez commented at the time: “I could see first through his eyes and also the way he talked, but more especially in his eyes.
“His eyes were brilliant, wide open and he was visibly in an abnormal condition … he was walking like a clown.”
The Crown is available to watch on Netflix.
