The US Embassy in Haiti has issued an emergency shelter-in-place order after gunshots were heard on the streets outside.
Workers were ordered not to approach the area, to avoid barricades, and to stay away from protests and large crowds of people.
They have also been urged to turn back and seek out a safe place if they find one.
The State Department said: “Heavy gunfire is occurring around the area of the US Embassy and residential compounds adjacent to the Trutier area of Tabarre.
“All Embassy personnel have been instructed to remain indoors and shelter-in-place until further notice. All others should avoid the area.”

Earlier this month, there were reports of heavy gunfire in the Trutier area of Port-au-Prince.
Haitian National Police responded to the incident and ordered personnell to avoid the area and use extreme caution if they transit through Trutier and surrounding areas.
The US Embassy on the Caribbean island is located in Haiti’s capital city.
American citizens who run into problems should call +509-2229-8000, the Embassy’s emergency number.
Civil unrest has been running rampant in Haiti for several years, with protests that began in 2018 as a response to fuel costs frequently turning violent, with looting and vandalism involved.
In September 2022, the US Embassy issued this statement: “The right to gather and protest is fundamental in any democracy. However, the United States strongly condemns the acts of violence, looting, and destruction that have recently occurred in Haiti and those who instigated these events for their own ends.
“We call on Haitians to express their views in a peaceful manner that respects humanitarian actors and law enforcement and allows unfettered access to Haitians in need in order to provide food, water, and medical care.
Now, protests pop up in response to a variety of causes.
In August, thousands of protesters hit the streets to call out the country’s devastating gang violence problem after a police officer was killed.
Government vehicles were set on fire, while masses of masked protesters confronted demanding protection and aid. Tear gas was later used by cops to disperse the crowds.
