The beautiful tiny island that became so fed up with tourists it banned them for 6 months

In a bold move, the Philippine government opted to close the world-renowned tropical paradise of Boracay for a six-month period, in 2018. The decision was part of a comprehensive rehabilitation effort aimed at addressing environmental issues and ensuring the sustainable future of the island.

Boracay, a small island located in the central Philippines, had long been celebrated for its pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant nightlife. However, in recent years, the island has faced growing challenges, including unregulated development, inadequate waste management, and environmental degradation.

The closure, announced by President Rodrigo Duterte, marked a commitment to addressing these issues head-on. In a press conference, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque stated: “The decision to close Boracay was not an easy one, but it was necessary. We needed to rehabilitate and restore the beauty of this island so that future generations could continue to enjoy its wonders.”

During the six-month closure, all tourists and non-residents were barred from entering Boracay. The government set up a task force composed of various agencies, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Department of Tourism (DOT), to oversee the island’s rehabilitation.

Among the major issues targeted for resolution were the inadequate sewage and waste disposal systems, illegal structures along the beachfront, and the impact of over-tourism on the island’s fragile ecosystem. The government aimed to implement stricter regulations on land use, waste management, and environmental protection to ensure that Boracay remained a sustainable and ecologically balanced destination.

Local businesses, particularly those reliant on tourism, faced economic challenges during the closure. However, the government pledged support for affected workers and businesses, emphasising the long-term benefits of the rehabilitation effort.

Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo urged travellers to consider other destinations in the Philippines during Boracay’s closure.

She said: “While we understand that the temporary closure may inconvenience some tourists, we encourage them to explore other beautiful destinations in our country. This is a short-term sacrifice for the long-term sustainability of Boracay.”

The closure of Boracay sparked both support and opposition, with environmentalists praising the government’s commitment to conservation, while some business owners expressed concerns about the economic impact. The rehabilitation effort was closely monitored by international environmental organisations, as Boracay’s case was seen as a test of the government’s dedication to balancing tourism and environmental preservation.
