Silent Witness stars Emilia Fox and David Caves have revealed their characters Nikki Alexander and Jack Hodgson will take on “parental roles” to other characters in the upcoming season. The actors explained the couple’s relationship dynamic changes for series 27 of the BBC drama.
After years of teasing viewers with their “will they won’t they romance they delighted fans when they finally got together. The next series finds them acting as parental figures to both trainee anatomical pathologist Velvy Schur (played by Alastair Michael) and Jack’s niece Cara Connolly (Rhiannon Jones).
“With Velvy and Cara, [Jack’s] taking on a new paternal role and Nikki, who doesn’t have children but becomes this go-to person, which you do in a partnership, you test things out. It’s a real trust with each other,” Emilia explained.
“They both take on those parental roles which is really great and makes sense but it’s not done in a heavy-handed way,” David explained.
The couple are still going strong three seasons after getting together and Emilia admitted to Hello! magazine and other media that a lot of thought had gone into the new dynamic. “I think because they are together now, we’ve been trying to work out how to have them in a relationship and have them working together,” said Emilia. “We didn’t want to have a break-up, conflict thing.”

The new season of the hugely successful show begins next month and sees Nikki, Jack and the rest of the Lyell team tackle disturbing new cases across five two-part mysteries.
According to the official synopsis, cases include a body found in an abandoned church, which sparks fears that a serial killer has resurfaced after 20 years.
There is also an episode that deals with death on a university campus. Meanwhile, the Lyell is infiltrated by a malevolent force.
Elsewhere, multiple bodies are found entombed beneath a train station in a makeshift mass grave.
The synopsis also revealed that Gabriel will seek advice from Jack in an unexpected way, and let down his guard at work with devastating results.
There is also drama for Velvy who tries to do the right thing by his family, but at great cost to himself.
And Cara undertakes work experience at the Lyell which impresses her unce but she is forced to intervene when she makes a shocking discovery about Velvy.
Silent Witness returns to BBC One on January 8.
