United have struggled in the final third for much of this season but they fared better than usual against Villa, with Marcus Rashford performing well alongside Garnacho and Hojlund at the top of the pitch. Ten Hag was happy to offer praise after the final whistle but was in no mood to rest on his laurels as he challenged them to keep impressing him on a weekly basis.
“I’m happy the strikers scored, it’s what we needed,” said Ten Hag on Amazon Prime. “I know we are capable of it. We have good finishers. Rashford, Garnacho and Hojlund are all good finishers and we have more, but also, they have to show it every game. If you are really believing and you have the willingness to score goals, you will score goals.”
Ten Hag went on to take aim at those who have criticised United’s lack of goals this season, saying: “People don’t see. They only judge the result, but we also played a solid game. They see the results and they are complaining. I know football is about results, but as a manager you also have to see the performances.”
Garnacho was also quick to hit back at United’s naysayers by pointing to their never-say-die attitude, which powered them to victory despite shipping two early goals against Villa. He went on to underline the influence of himself, Rashford and Hojlund in delivering the goods to earn all three points against one of the Premier League’s best sides.
“I said we just needed one goal to get back into it, I got that first one but it was offside,” said Garnacho. “But, as I said before, we never give up so it was a case of scoring the first goal and keeping on pressing. I am very happy for Rasmus also to get his first league goal.

“Too many people talk about the strikers at Man United, that we never score goals or get assists. But today, you see Rashford with assists, goals for Rasmus and me. Everyone is very happy.”
It remains to be seen whether United’s forwards will be able to build on their newly-found momentum by scoring more important goals over the coming weeks. Their next game against Nottingham Forest will represent a golden chance to secure back-to-back victories in the Premier League, which would boost their fading hopes of qualifying for Europe next season.
