The Vicar of Dibley star, whose father was in the RAF which paid for her education, said: “You’re suddenly with posh girls and you’re not a posh girl and it’s all very weird there.
“The school I went to was an ex-convent. At the end of the school day you would go into the refectory and you would have bread, butter and jam, and milk or tea.”
Dawn, 66, added: “When I first went there, very nervous, missing my mum and dad like mad, there were the plates with cold butter on chopped up. I thought this was cheese, and I just ate the butter.
“And because I was caught by somebody watching me, I had to pretend that’s what I do – so I had to keep on eating the butter.
“A kid was watching and thinking ‘You’ve got that wrong, haven’t you?’. So I had to make out ‘No, I haven’t got it wrong, I’ve got it very right actually – I eat butter, it’s what I do’.
