Shohei Ohtani is a officially a Los Angeles Dodgers player, after the team confirmed it has signed the two-way Japanese star to a mega-money 10-year contract.

The news of Ohtani’s move across LA from the Angels to the Dodgers surfaced earlier in the week, but the team have now confirmed the deal – which will see them pay Ohtani $700m in exchange for him playing for them for the next decade.

It emerged earlier on Monday that Ohtani will actually only earn $2m a year for the 10 seasons he plays for the team, and will then collect the final $680m of his $700m deal in the years following that, when he has turned 39 years of age.

In a statement, Ohtani said of his move: ‘Dodger fans, thank you for welcoming me to your team.

‘I can say 100 percent that you, the Dodger organization and I share the same goal – to bring World Series parades to the streets of Los Angeles.’

Dodgers chairman Mark Walter labeled the superstar a ‘once-in-a-generation talent and one of the most exciting professional athletes in the world’.

In his own statement, he added: ‘On behalf of the LA Dodgers and our fans everywhere, we welcome Shohei Ohtani to the Dodgers, the home of Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax and Hideo Nomo, three of the sport’s most legendary and path-breaking players.

‘We congratulate him on his historic contract with our storied franchise.’

That was the only mention of the details of the contract, which have been revealed in multiple reports and will see Ohtani earn the most money of any player in Major League Baseball history.

Incredibly, though, he will only be the 17th highest-paid player on the Dodgers roster in 2024, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, with his salary listed as $2m for each of the 10 seasons he is contracted with the Dodgers.

After that, his pay takes a huge jump, with the Japanese superstar earning the majority of his money when he is in his 40s.
