Grand Designs viewers slam 'eyesore' renovation 'plonked in the street'

Grand Designs viewers were left confused and annoyed with the house renovation during a recent episode of the Channel 4 series.

Graeme and Melanie wanted their new home in Hackney to celebrate their blended family, but when trying to restore two small garages, the pair faced major setbacks.

After extending their renovation by a year due to setbacks and going over their initial budget, the house was finally built but viewers were left unimpressed with the colour and height of the home.

Taking to their X accounts, formerly known as Twitter, @CrazyCraven01 noted: “That house looks like a factory #granddesigns.”

@DuncDacy said: “It looks horrible. Poor neighbours, they have literally plonked it in the middle of the street. #GrandDesigns.”

@Poppyblew commented: “Looks like a giant shed #granddesigns. Feel really sorry for the neighbours having that in their street. #granddesigns.”

@AmyJoanne__ added: “I get it’s a house they designed from the heart but it’s a bloody eyesore #granddesigns.”

@i71Sheriff expressed: “Not feeling this home at all – red brick Monopoly house.”

@stryder444 quipped: “It’s nowhere near finished yet. This grand reveal is premature. #granddesigns.”

However, not all viewers were unhappy with the project as Cindy Romans praised: “Despite their setbacks, they’ve smashed it! Hope they’re happy in their new home.”

Their initial budget for the house was £450,000 but spent an extra £100,000 due to the setbacks, and unfortunately had to consider selling the property to make their money back.

Melanie explained to host Kevin McCloud: “I really want to see this space inhabited by us as a family, leaving our marks and creating history.”

The basement they had renovated and were planning to have their daughters move into had issues with the concrete.

They were having to add an additional layer to the walls which meant expanding into the third floor when it became available.

For the time being, one of their daughters was able to move into the second bedroom, with the other having to camp in the living room.

Grand Designs airs Wednesday from 9pm on Channel 4.
