Martin Kemp ‘does not have one friend’ after people betrayed his trust, son Roman reveals

Capital FM DJ Roman Kemp has admitted his dad Martin Kemp didn’t shield him from the pitfalls of fame.

Martin, 61, who rose to notoriety as the bassist of Spandau Ballet, “does not have one friend”, according to his son, 30.

Speaking out on what growing up with two celebrities as parents taught him, Roman revealed the only person his dad can trust is his mum, Wham! backing singer Shirlie Kemp, 61.

Addressing his dad’s behind-the-scenes struggles in an interview with this week’s Radio Times, Roman said: My upbringing gave me an opportunity to see that that the world isn’t as nice as people think it is.

“If someone thinks about fame, they think about the best parts of it.

“Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a sob story for famous people – they do have it good. But it’s also very lonely. My dad does not have one friend.

“He lives his life like that because he’s had so many people in his life that he thought he could trust, then realised he couldn’t.

“My dad’s favourite person is my mum!” Roman added.

Despite being very aware of the more difficult elements of fame, Roman has followed in his parents’ footsteps by pursuing a career in the spotlight.

The star admitted his main worry is that he would become part of a “soap opera”, with Strictly viewers speculating on whether his on-screen chemistry with his partner had sparked love behind the scenes.

He told OK! Magazine: “I think sometimes the show takes away from the skill of the dancers and it becomes like a soap opera of who’s dating who.

“The only way I’d do Strictly is if I was teamed up with Johannes [Radebe].”
