Three brand new rules are set to be implemented by the UFC in a positive shake-up to the regulations first established 30 years ago.

The UFC and the Association of Boxing Commission have approved the upcoming changes, which have been met with a positive response from fans.

Combat sports regulatory lawyer Erik Magraken gave a breakdown of the rules on Twitter, outlining what they will mean in the octagon.

The first rule is regarding cuts. Often severe lacerations will cause a fight to be called off, with the only chance to work on it coming between rounds.

But now, a cut-man will be able to work on the injury in the middle a round if it is caused by a foul, such as a headbutt or other kind of illegal blow.

They will not be permitted to work on anything else other than tending to the wound.

One of the major ongoing issues in the UFC is eye pokes, accidental or otherwise.

So often, fighters suffer a debilitating poke to the eye, losing vision and causing the fight to be called off midway through.

In addition to five minutes for recovery, fighters will now be given a cold compress on their eye before a doctor comes in to ask if they can see.

Allowing the fighter to have most of the five minutes to recover before then examining the damaged eye should lead to more fights continuing safely.

The third rule will encourage more action and allow referees greater discretion to change things when a contest is stalling.

It is not enough for a fighter to maintain a superior position if they are not trying to advance, cause damage or finish the fight.

‘Trying to win by avoiding losing’, is the phrase used by the commission and is what they’re trying to negate.

Fighter who suffer cuts from illegal blows would be able to be treated mid-round

They are trying to achieve greater consistency across all fights, so athletes know when they need to push the action and are not doing enough.

If correctly enforced, these three rule changes could have a significant – and positive – impact on fights in the UFC.

There should in theory, be more action and greater care for fighters trying to recover from accidental or illegal blows.
