Jamie Carragher points finger over Liverpool transfer mess as FSG let off – 'It's a joke'

Jamie Carragher has slammed Liverpool’s approach to the summer transfer window as an ‘absolute mess’ and a ‘joke’. Failed bids for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia have left the Reds icon believing there is a disjointed set-up among the Anfield hierarchy.

Liverpool lost out to Chelsea in their pursuit of Brighton’s midfield ace Caicedo. And after placing a late bid for Lavia, the Belgian appears set to join the Blues, too.

And Carragher has slated Liverpool’s attempts to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s midfield. The former defender believes having four directors of football in 18 months is the sign of an ‘absolute mess’.

Carragher ranted on Sky Sports: “Liverpool have known they’ve needed midfield reinforcements since around August last season. This is not on the owners, this is on the structure of the football club when you go back to two years ago when Liverpool were the model team for anyone in Europe, not just the Premier League, to follow.

“When Liverpool were winning the league and getting into Champions League finals, they’re not spending as much money as the other team but they’re producing players. Yes, they have a great manager.

“But they had a guy called Michael Edwards who was at the top of the club as a director of football. He had a transfer committee below him and it worked. He left. His No 2 then took over and he was in the job for six months before he left.

“You have to ask the questions why these people are moving on from the football club. I don’t know – I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

“The new guy (Jorg Schmadtke) has come in, he’s got a relationship with Jurgen Klopp. He’s only there for the summer. That’s all he’s there for and then he moves on and Liverpool get another director of football.

“In the space of 18 months, Liverpool have had four directors of football. Now, they haven’t got deals done. That is your job in that position to get deals over the line. The two players Liverpool bought have buy-out clauses. There’s no negotiating and there’s no big deal. You just meet the buy-out clause.

Liverpool have not got the deals over the line and it’s been embarrassing. You start with Lavia, don’t pay a certain amount and then you go for Caicedo – yes, you get something agreed. And that’s why we can’t be critical of the owners who were willing to pay £110m and break the transfer record.

“But to go with him when he’s been talking with Chelsea for three months, Now back to Lavia… it’s an absolute mess. It’s a joke.
