Alarm after an electric car caught fire while recharging its battery in Mallorca

Firefighters were forced to “practically cover an electric vehicle in foam” after its battery burst into flames while attached to a charging port in southern Mallorca, Spain.

Locals panicked in the early hours of Wednesday morning (August 9) after they saw smoke rising from the black vehicle.

Crews of the Palma Fire Brigade travelled half-an-hour to the fire to extinguish the flames.

Local authorities had to cordoned off the area to prevent cases of poisoning from smoke inhalation and reduce traffic to facilitate the work of the firefighters.

The emergency teams worked in the area for about two-and-a-half hours until they were able to remove the vehicle.

The fire broke out around seven in the morning in an electric vehicle that was connected to a charging point on the corner of Avenida Miramar and Calle Sant Cristofol, in the town of Llucmajor, southeast of Palma.

Locals sent the alarm after they saw smoke coming out of the vehicle, with fire services arriving swirly afterwards.

The fire services struggled to extinguish the flames owing to the highly flammable nature of electric car vehicles.

They worked for more than two hours, until around 9.30am, when the car was completely covered in foam.

Meanwhile, the Local Police of Llucmajor cordoned off the area to prevent cases of poisoning from smoke inhalation. ‌

Just after 9.30pm, the vehicle was moved by a crane to a remote area, given the risk that the battery fire could be reactivated after a while.

The Bombers de Mallorca Twitter channel later posted a video showing the aftermath of the incident.

Multiple fire engines can be seen before the burnt out vehicle, covered in foam, is shown in the distance.
