Laundry expert shares ‘superhero’ 99p cupboard staple to transform ‘dingy’ towels

Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap, told Express.co.uk: “Baking soda is like a superhero when it comes to tackling tough laundry challenges.

“Just add half a cup of baking soda along with your regular detergent when washing your towels. It works wonders in freshening them up, removing stains, and neutralising any unwanted smells.

“It is not only great for freshening up your towels; it also helps brighten white fabrics. If you have dingy or yellowed towels, adding baking soda to your wash cycle can help restore their whiteness.

“Just remember to follow the care instructions on your coloured towels, as baking soda may have a slight bleaching effect.”

Baking soda can be picked up for as little as 99p from various retailers including B&M and The Range.

What’s more, when baking soda is mixed with white vinegar, the duo can help to strip detergent residue, leaving towels soft and fluffy.

The expert explained: “When it comes to washing towels white vinegar can be a game-changer. Add about half a cup of white vinegar to your washer during the rinse cycle.

“It acts as a natural fabric softener and helps break down detergent residue, leaving your towels softer and fresher.”

As well as this, it can help to eliminate any lingering odours which may have built up over time, perfect if you’re struggling with mildew scents.

Using detergent isn’t always necessary when washing with the eco-friendly staples, and baking soda can just be placed on top of the dirty laundry, with white vinegar in the detergent drawer.

Deyan added: “While it might be tempting to toss everything into the washer together, washing towels and clothing separately is a good idea.

“Towels tend to be more absorbent and can release lint during the wash cycle. If mixed with clothing, those little lint particles can cling to fabrics and make them look less fresh.

“Additionally, towels often benefit from a hotter water temperature and a more robust washing cycle to remove dirt, oils and bacteria effectively.

“By keeping them separate, you can give your towels the TLC they deserve without compromising the delicate fabrics of your clothing items.”

Deyan recommended washing bath towels after three uses to get rid of bacteria growth and to prevent any smelly odours.

In some cases they do need to be washed every use, if you’ve used one to mop up sweat or if you have sensitive skin for example.

The expert noted: “You should also make sure to let your towel dry fully after every use to prevent germs.”
