Italy rocked with freak weather as flooding, ice, and hailstones hit north after 45C heat

Sheets of ice and fast-moving water flooded streets in Seregno, Northern Italy, this weekend as a shocking video showing the strange occurrence has gone viral on social media after days of brutal hailstorms in the region.

The footage shows rapid floods batter the small streets of Seregno, while sheets of ice form on top of the surface, resembling tiny icebergs.

The person behind the camera, who is filming from a balcony above the water, can be heard saying: “It looks like a river flowing.”

No one can be seen in the video, apart from a nearby shop owner attempting to sweep the water out of his building.

Someone else off-camera says: “I see the shoes-shop owner in front of me and water is coming inside the shop.”

Hailstorms have hit the regions of Lombardy, where Seregno is located, and Veneto hard over the past couple of days.

On Thursday, the governor of Veneto, Luca Zaia, declared a state of emergency after more than 110 were injured by the extreme weather.

Hailstones the size of tennis balls battered parts of the regions, and some were up to 10cm in diameter.

The Veneto regional civil protection said emergency services responded to more than 500 calls relating to property damage and personal injuries.

Mr Zaia said: “The wave of bad weather, after having impacted our mountain regions, has now also hit the plains, causing injury to some people.”

People in the region had been injured by falling hailstones and broken glass, as well as by slipping and falling.

Winds reaching up to 140mph (87mph) were also reported in the Veneto area.

Before the hailstorms, the region faced its third heatwave of the year.

The Italian Ministry of Health urged regions to increase house-call services to help the sick and elderly without them having to leave their homes. Heat stations were also set up in hospitals.

In Rome, the civil protection department set up 28 heat help points around the city to prevent people having health problems in the extreme heat.
