A number of female Wimbledon competitors back in 2014 had to play without a bra, sparking fierce debate around the tournament’s strict underwear rules. Organisers have relaxed the regulations ahead of this year’s tournament, which has gone down well with a number of prominent players.
The prior rules at SW19 stated that both male and female players had to play entirely in white, including undergarments, with the exception of ‘a single trim of colour no wider than one centimetre’.
Nine years ago, as a result of the regulations, British hopeful Naomi Broady had to play her daunting clash against Caroline Wozniacki without a bra. She lost the encounter in straight sets.
At the time, 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash slammed the regulations as ‘ridiculous’ and revealed that multiple female players had been forced into similar positions.
“Some of the girls have been told to go back and change their bras and tops because they had slight colour on them,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I believe some of the girls didn’t have suitable sports bras and had to go without them. It has absolutely gone ridiculous.”

To the relief of many, Wimbledon chiefs have scrapped the strict all-white dress code for female players this year as coloured under-shorts will now be allowed.
“So, when I heard this I was really happy because last year I went on the pill to stop myself bleeding because I knew we had to wear white under-shorts, and I didn’t want to face any embarrassment.
“We’re running around sweating, doing the splits on the court. This year I knew my period was going to be during Wimbledon again, so I’m very happy that I won’t have to do the same thing as last year. I think it’s a real positive and it’s really great. Really forward-thinking.”
