'Essential' menopause skincare tips to help get a youthful appearance – expert

While there are lots of commonly known symptoms of perimenopause, only 22 percent of women cited skin changes as an area of concern, according to research by Hada Labo Tokyo.

However, an expert explained the change can leave the skin looking less than plump.

Women’s Health expert, Dr Catherine Hood and advisor to Hada Labo Tokyo skincare said: “Menopause brings with it a host of changes, and this includes changes to the skin. During perimenopause, a woman’s ovaries produce less oestrogen, the hormone that helps to maintain skin’s plumpness and moisture.

“So when levels start to reduce it means our skin can dry out and look thinner.

“The lack of oestrogen can also lead to lower collagen levels. Collagen is something that our body produces less of as we age; it’s a form of protein, essential to help skin remain firm, rather than sagging.

“Collagen is also essential for the health of our bones, muscles and tendons.”

A good skincare routine is important at any age but it can make a huge difference when entering the perimenopause, Dr Hood continued.

She recommended using a product that contains hyaluronic acid (HA) to keep the skin hydrated.

She added: “Counteracting skin changes ahead of the menopause is essential. Even if you haven’t implemented a skincare routine in previous years, you can still show your skin plenty of love by ensuring you use hydrating products packed with HA which busts dry skin that is all too often faced by menopausal women, leading to lines, wrinkles and dull skin.

“Hada Labo Tokyo Premium range contains five or more levels of HAs which penetrate all skin layers and include a day and a night cream – which helps fill lines and wrinkles as well as intensely moisturising the skin deeply – great news for menopausal skin.

“In particular, the new Hada Labo Tokyo Premium Lotion Intense Super Deep Hydrator has seven types of HAs including fermented HA which enhances and strengthens the skin barrier function too.

“The unique Lock-in-Moist formula helps to maintain high levels of moisture in the skin for less visible wrinkles and radiant, smooth skin. Great news for people with dry, dehydrated or sensitive skin too.”

There are a number of hydrating products on the market that contain HA.

Including one of these is a key step in maintaining a youthful appearance, the expert explained.
