It is the second time it has happened to the Mets this season. Max Scherzer was found to have foreign substances on his hands vs. the Dodgers on April 19.

As a result of the incident, Smith will receive a 10-day ban.

The Mets’ No. 40 will have the opportunity to appeal his suspension. He was replaced by John Curtiss.

Smith is the fourth pitcher to be ejected this season for failing to pass the hands check.

‘A player who possesses or applies foreign substances in violation of the playing rules is subject to immediate ejection from the game and will be suspended automatically,’ Michael Hill, Senior Vice-President of On-Field Operations wrote in a memo to teams earlier this year.

At the time of writing, the Yankees lead the Mets 7-6 at the top of the eighth inning.
