Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticized the indictment of rival Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump saying there had been double standards in issuing charges.
DeSantis also promised to fire FBI chief Christopher Wray as one of his first acts of presidents if he were elected while suggesting that if Trump had been charged with crimes then Hillary Clinton should also have faced charges.
‘With me, you know, you’ll have a new FBI Director on day one. We’ll clean out all these agencies on day one. We’re going to have a major overhaul.
‘I think there needs to be one standard of justice in this country,’ DeSantis said as he made remarks at a party convention in Greensboro, North Carolina.
He condemned what he termed a ‘weaponization’ of government agencies, although he was careful not to mention Trump by name in his speech.

‘Hillary had the emails,’ DeSantis said. ‘Is there a different standard for a Democrat Secretary of State versus a former Republican president?’
Hillary Clinton, who was secretary of state under President Barack Obama, lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.
During the campaign, she faced questions about her handling of classified material after it became public that she had used a private email server in her home for some of her correspondence.
A U.S. State Department investigation found no evidence of deliberate mishandling of classified information by department employees, and the FBI said Clinton had been ‘careless’ but it did not recommend criminal charges.
The rift between the GOP and FBI Director Wray first opened during the Russia investigation of then-President Trump and has only widened amid the FBI’s wide-ranging criminal investigation into the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, which some Republicans view as overly zealous and politicized.

In touching upon Trump’s new criminal charges, DeSantis suggested that he believed them to be politically motivated warning attendees that Washington was full of bureaucrats who had little accountability and were abusing their power.
Prosecutors unsealed a 37-count indictment against Trump earlier in the day, accusing the former president of risking some of the country’s most sensitive security secrets after leaving office in 2021.
Trump faces charges of unauthorized retention of classified documents and conspiracy to obstruct justice, according to federal court documents made public.
Republicans have alleged that the investigation into Trump, who is running to unseat Democratic President Joe Biden from the White House in 2024, is politically biased.
Biden and top officials have repeatedly said the Justice Department is acting independently.
‘There needs to be one standard of justice in this country. Let’s enforce it on everybody and make sure we all know the rules,’ DeSantis said.
‘You can’t have one faction of society weaponizing the power of the state against factions that it doesn’t like. And that’s what we’ve seen,’ said DeSantis, who is running a distant second behind Trump in opinion polls for the Republican nomination.
Trump’s latest indictment in theory allows DeSantis to level the criticism that the runaway frontrunner is unfit for office.
But he runs the risk of alienating Trump’s loyal base, whose support has only grown more fervent since the Manhattan indictment.

As a result, many rivals have rallied to Trump’s side, perhaps hoping to keep their powder dry until he is finally taken out of the running by further indictments expected in the coming months.
Trump is under federal investigation over his role in the January 6, 2021 US Capitol insurrection and media reports suggest racketeering and conspiracy charges are set to drop in Georgia in August over the tycoon’s campaign to overturn the election there.
DeSantis who has been polling a distant second to Trump, has exercised restraint in comments over his rival’s legal woes but the rhetorical hand grenades being lobbed between the camps have become more aggressive in recent weeks.
In addition to DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence and former President Donald Trump are both scheduled to address delegates later on Saturday at the state convention in Greensboro.
