Davina McCall, 55, had no issues being filmed having her coil changed in the name of education in her Channel 4 documentary Pill Revolution.
The hour-long programme investigated women’s ongoing problems with contraception six decades on from the contraceptive pill first being used.
Wanting to teach viewers about having her coil replaced, Davina visited a leading gynaecologist to carry out the procedure.
Davina admitted having a speculum inserted was “always a bit uncomfortable” but reminded viewers most women over the age of 25 will know that from having smear tests.
“But it is not too bad and with this gel, I can barely feel a thing,” Davina explained.

The doctor told Davina to take a deep breath and “blow out your breath so it hits the ceiling” as she removed the coil.
Davina said that part of the process was “uncomfortable” and left her with some “cramping”, but she could handle the pain.
She felt “sore” and a “scrape” as a new coil was inserted but Davina was pleased at how “quick” the 10-minute process felt.
“The thing I like about the Mirena coil is that I am sorted and I don’t need to think about it,” she concluded.

Channel 4 viewers heaped praise on Davina following her filmed medical procedure.
Charlotte Varela said: “Kudos to @ThisisDavina for showing her coil insertion but having it done at a private clinic with a top clinician really isn’t representative. I don’t know one person who’s been offered anaesthetic, numbing or pain relief. Some have been REFUSED pain relief. #PillRevolution.” (sic)
Louise Quarmby added: “Full kudos to @ThisisDavina for showing her coil insertion on TV #pillrevolution.”
Dr Forbes commented: “Greatly enjoyed seeing another coil fitter who does holiday chat during the coil fit. We also like to chat about tattoos, manicures, work and weekend plans to distract you! #c4davinapill.”
Peppy wrote: “A groundbreaking moment on national TV –
@ThisisDavina getting her coil changed on camera. This transparency is what we need to normalise conversations about women’s health.”
Meanwhile, Louise Heaney penned: “@ThisisDavina #pillrevolution What about females over 50 looking for contraception?
“We’re pushed to accept the coil without an alternative. I insisted on continuing with the injection albeit not recommended. I’ve no periods during perimenopause. Winning.” (sic)
