Former President Donald Trump lashed out at President Joe Biden following news he is set to formally announce his plans to run for reelection in 2024 on Tuesday.
Biden will ask voters to give him more time to ‘finish the job’ he began, but in a lengthy statement on Monday night, Trump decried the very idea that Biden would even stand.
‘With such a calamitous and failed presidency, it is almost inconceivable that Biden would even think of running for reelection.
‘You know what happened in the last election: they cheated, and they rigged the election,’ Trump railed.
Biden, who would be 86 at the end of a second term, is betting his first-term legislative achievements and more than 50 years of experience in Washington will count for more than concerns over his age.
He faces a smooth path to winning his party’s nomination, with no serious Democratic rivals but he’s still set to face a hard-fought struggle to retain the presidency in a bitterly divided nation.
True to form, Trump did not hold back as he called out Biden’s unsuitability.

‘You could take the five worst presidents in American history, and put them together, and they would not have done the damage Joe Biden has done to our Nation in just a few short years. Not even close,’ Trump’s statement began.
‘Thanks to Joe Biden’s socialist spending calamity, American families are being decimated by the worst inflation in half a century. Banks are failing. Our currency is crashing and the dollar will soon no longer be the world standard, which will be our greatest defeat in over 200 years,’ Trump continued.
‘Real wages have been falling 24 months in a row—in other words, under Biden, workers have gotten a PAY CUT each and every month for two straight years. We have surrendered our energy independence, just like we surrendered in Afghanistan, which we had just a short time ago—and the price of gasoline just hit a 5-month high, and it’s going much higher than that.’
Trump then turned his attention to the border and the numbers of illegal immigrants flocking across on a daily basis.
‘Under my leadership, we had the most secure border in U.S. history, by far. Never had a border like this. Under Biden, the Southern Border has been abolished—and millions of illegal aliens have been released into our communities. What’s happening now is beyond belief. They’re coming in from mental institutions and prisons… and being dumped into the United States.’

The former president detailed his views on how Biden had failed when it came to leadership on the world stage.
‘Biden has totally humiliated our Nation – starting with the Afghanistan disaster, perhaps the most embarrassing event in the history of our country. It meant so much to our enemies when they watched that horrible retreat. Russia is teaming up with China. Iran is days away from a nuclear bomb—not even thinkable. Ukraine has been devastated by an invasion that would never, ever have happened if I was president—and Joe Biden has led us to the very brink of World War III.
‘On top of it all, Biden is the most corrupt president in American history—and that’s not even close. Nobody can believe what’s going on, with again no retribution whatsoever,’ Trump continued.
‘There has never been a greater contrast between two successive administrations in all of American history. Ours being greatness, and theirs being failure.’
Trump ended his statement with a repeat of his popular MAGA refrain.
‘With your support in the election, we will defeat Joe Biden in 2024. We will rescue our economy. We will crush inflation. We will stop the invasion on our southern border. We will restore our Nation’s dignity. And we will prevent World War III from happening. Together, we will all Make America Great Again!’

Trump taped an interview Monday with Newsmax’s Greg Kelly and was again asked if he believed Biden, 80, would be the Democratic nominee.
The former president, who’s running for the 2024 GOP nomination, speculated that would not be the case saying, ‘it would seem to me that somewhere along the line something will happen.’
‘It seems hard to believe,’ Trump said. ‘And I’m not speaking for any standpoint other than I watched him like everybody else watches him and it certainly seems hard to believe.’
‘It seemed hard to believe four years ago but he was in the basement and now they’re actually doing a tape of the announcement,’ Trump went on. ‘He’s not going to make the announcement … but he’s doing a tape. This way he can do it four or five times so he gets it right.’

On Thursday, The Washington Post reported that the 2024 Biden campaign would launch his campaign on Tuesday by releasing a video.
The date was picked because Biden had announced his successful 2020 bid exactly four years earlier: on April 25, 2019.
The president wouldn’t confirm the timing when reporters asked him about it at the White House Monday.
‘I told you I am planning on running,’ the president said as he departed an event in the White House Rose Garden. ‘I will let you know real soon when.’
Trump kicked off the 2024 presidential cycle historically early by announcing his own bid on November 15, just a week after the 2022 midterm races.
He did so by holding an event and delivering a speech at his Mar-a-Lago Florida home and club.
‘I don’t think a thing like that’s ever been done, to put it on tape,’ Trump said on Newsmax.
But actually announcing via video is extremely common for presidential campaigns, with a candidate usually hitting the campaign trail several days later.
Both Sen. Tim Scott and former U.N. Amb. Nikki Haley previewed their presidential ambitions by releasing videos earlier this year.
Biden announced via video in April 2019 before holding his first rally several days later in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Trump’s ‘basement’ comment comes because Biden was way more COVID cautious than Trump during their 2020 campaigns.
Biden filmed a number of campaign videos from his Delaware basement and would hold socially distant drive-in events, where a limited number of supporters could attend in their vehicles.
Trump would pack thousands into tight spaces – though mostly outdoors – despite the COVID risk.

While the question of seeking reelection has been a given for most modern presidents, that’s not always been the case for Biden.
A notable swath of Democratic voters have indicated they would prefer he not run, in part because of his age – concerns Biden himself has called ‘totally legitimate’.
Yet few things have unified Democratic voters like the prospect of Trump returning to power. And Biden’s political standing within his party stabilized after Democrats notched a stronger-than-expected performance in last year´s midterm elections.
For now, the 76-year-old Trump is the favorite to emerge as the Republican nominee, creating the potential of a historic sequel to the tumultuous 2020 campaign. But Trump faces significant hurdles of his own, including the designation of being the first former president to face criminal charges.
The remaining GOP field is volatile, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis emerging as an early alternative to Trump. His stature is also in question, however, amid questions about his readiness to campaign outside of his increasingly Republican-leaning state.

‘Let’s finish the job,’ Biden said a dozen times during his State of the Union address in February, listing everything from passing a ban on assault-style weapons and lowering the cost of prescription drugs to codifying a national right to abortion after the Supreme Court’s ruling last year overturning Roe v. Wade.
Buoyed by the midterm results , Biden plans to continue to cast all Republicans as embracing what he calls ‘ultra-MAGA’ politics – a reference to Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan – regardless of whether his predecessor ends up on the 2024 ballot.
He’s spent the last several months road-testing campaign themes, including painting Republicans as fighting for tax cuts for businesses and the wealthy while trying to cut social safety net benefits relied on by everyday Americans.
‘Look, I view myself as a bridge, not as anything else,’ Biden said in March 2020, as he campaigned in Michigan with younger Democrats, including now-Vice President Kamala Harris, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
‘There´s an entire generation of leaders you saw stand behind me. They are the future of this country.’

Three years later, the president now 80, Biden allies say his time in office has demonstrated that he saw himself as more of a transformational than a transitional leader.
Still, many Democrats would prefer that Biden didn´t run again. A recent poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows just 47% of Democrats say they want him to seek a second term, up from 37% in February. And Biden´s verbal – and occasional physical – stumbles have become fodder among the GOP, which has sought to cast him as unfit for office.
Biden, on multiple occasions, has brushed back concerns about his age, saying simply, ‘Watch me.’
During a routine physical in February, his physician, Dr. Kevin O´Connor, declared him ‘healthy, vigorous’ and ‘fit’ to handle his White House responsibilities.
Aides acknowledge that while some in his party might prefer an alternative to Biden, there is anything but consensus within their diverse coalition on who that might be.
And they insist that when Biden is compared to whomever the GOP nominates, Democrats and independents will rally around Biden.
To prevail again, Biden will need to revive the alliance of young voters and Black voters – particularly women – along with blue-collar Midwesterners, moderates and disaffected Republicans who helped him win in 2020.
He’ll have to again carry the so-called ‘blue wall’ in the Upper Midwest, while protecting his position in Georgia and Arizona, longtime GOP strongholds that he narrowly won in his last campaign.
Biden is not expected to dramatically alter his day-to-day schedule as a candidate – at least not immediately – with aides believing his strongest political asset is showing the American people that he is governing. And if he follows the Obama playbook, he may not hold any formal campaign rallies until well into 2024.
