New York Giants sign safety Bobby McCain to 'one-year contract', as Big Blue replenishes depth

New York Giants sign safety Bobby McCain to ‘one-year contract’, as Big Blue replenishes their depth after Julian Love’s departure

The Giants have added defensive back Bobby McCain to bolster their secondary, after the 29-year-old played the last two seasons with the Commanders.

The deal is for one year, according to ESPN.

McCain, who started 16 games for Washington each of the last two years, can also play at cornerback.

He totaled 139 tackles and four interceptions during his time in the US capital.

McCain’s arrival in New York comes after the departure of safety Julian Love, who emerged as a starter for Wink Martindale’s defense last year.

Love, a 2019 fourth-round pick, joined the Seahawks on a two-year, $12million contract that was more than what the Giants offered.

The Giants offered Love a contract during their bye week, according to the NY Post, but the former Notre Dame player ultimately left as the Giants focused on Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley early in free agency.

While the Giants will be optimistic that McCain can earn the starting job, the loss of Love is not insignificant.

The 25-year-old was a team captain last year and finished with 124 tackles – the most on the team – and also contributed on special teams.

McCain will be entering his ninth season in the league, after being selected in the fifth round of the 2015 draft.

He spent his first six seasons with the Dolphins.
