The cricketer left India after the second Test of the four-match series in India to be by his mum’s side at home in Sydney.

Maria was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. The cancer returned in early 2022 before reaching the point where she was moved to palliative care.

‘I feel I am best being here with my family,’ he said in a statement at the time.

‘I appreciate the overwhelming support I have received from Cricket Australia and my teammates. Thanks for your understanding.’

His teammates will wear black armbands in the fourth Test against India on Friday to honour their captain and Maria.

Cricket Australia posted the following statement:

‘We are deeply saddened at the passing of Maria Cummins overnight. On behalf of Australian Cricket, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Pat, the Cummins family and their friends,’ the statement read.

‘The Australian Men’s team will today wear black armbands as a mark of respect.’

Previously the Barmy Army, the travelling supporter group for the English Test cricket side, paid tribute to Maria by playing a song in her name at a Test match against New Zealand.

Cummins personally thanked the Barmy Army for their gesture.

‘This is amazing @TheBarmyArmy, thank you. Mum loved watching this and felt very touched,’ he posted at the time.
