North Korea fires long range ballistic missile over Japan with it landing just off coast

North Korea has fired a ballistic missile off its east coast, officials from South Korea have claimed. The missile was reportedly fired towards the sea and landed inside Japan’s exclusive economic zone more than an hour after it was launched, suggesting it could be one of North Korea’s largest missiles. It comes just a day after North Korea’s Foreign Ministry threatened to take “unprecedentedly” strong action against South Korea after it announced planned military exercises.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul said the ballistic missile was fired at around 5:22 p.m. from an area in Sunan, the site of Pyongyang’s international airport. It didn’t immediately say where the weapon landed.

The launch was North Korea’s first known testing activity since Jan. 1, when it test-fired a short-range weapon.
