Mecca Beauty buffs share the ideal foundation for every decade

Beauty experts have shared the perfect foundation choice whatever decade you’re in, and why thousands of women swear by these options when it comes to their everyday products.

The team from Mecca Cosmetica said no matter what you do, your skin will look and feel different every decade, and so it’s important to adjust which foundation you’re using accordingly.

From your teens right the way through to your 50s and 60s, your complexion will have different requirements due to hormones – whether that’s something more matte or a more dewy finish.

The texture will also change, which means you’ll have different requirements.

IN YOUR TEENS

MAC Cosmetics Strobe Dewy Skin Tint, $59

The best foundation for your teenage years according to Mecca is MAC Cosmetics’ Strobe Dewy Skin Tint ($59).

The team explained that in your youth, it’s time to let your natural skin shine through, and this is the ‘perfect makeup/skincare hybrid’.

‘With the hydrating properties of a moisturiser and a pearlised finish for a touch of radiant coverage, you get just a hint of tint while letting your natural features shine through,’ the Mecca team said.

The product is available in a vast array of different shades for every skin tone and texture.

When it comes to your twenties, Mecca advise that you opt for slightly more coverage than your did in your teenage years (pictured wearing Summer Fridays)

IN YOUR TWENTIES

Summer Fridays Sheer Skin Tint, $70

When it comes to your twenties, Mecca advise that you opt for slightly more coverage than your did in your teenage years.

‘Summer Fridays’ is a step up from a tinted moisturiser, but it’s not as heavy as a full foundation,’ they advised.

You can either apply the product lightly for sheer coverage or build it up on the days where you need more.

Shoppers on the Mecca website have awarded the $70 buy five stars, writing that it is a ‘new favourite’ and ‘just so flawless’.

‘This is my new favourite everyday skin product,’ one reviewer wrote.

‘I absolutely love this sheer skin tint! It applies really nicely,’ another added.

Mecca advise that you switch from powders to creams and liquids in your 30s, which will help to make you look younger (complexion drops pictured)

Your thirties require a solid and dedicated skincare routine, with plenty of serums, acids and even retinol – which can help with cell turnover.

‘After all, by 30, most of us are starting to see the beginnings of fine lines and loss of volume as collagen production gradually slows,’ Mecca said.

With this, you need a medium coverage foundation ‘that acts like a serum’.

Enter Westman Atelier’s complexion drops.

‘Packed with skincare ingredients like Tsubaki oil and ginseng, this formula glides on to actively hydrate and nourish skin while you wear it,’ Mecca said.

It also includes pomegranate extract, which neutralises free radicals and supports healthy-looking skin.

Ginger Root Complex calms and soothes instantly and over time. The drops are made without parabens, silicones, phthalates, talk or synthetic fragrance.

Mecca advise that you also switch from powders to creams and liquids in your 30s, which will help to make you look younger.

IN YOUR FORTIES AND FIFTIES

Ellis Faas Skin Veil Foundation, $108

Beauty experts all agree that the texture of your skin changes dramatically in your forties and fifties, and so it could be time once again to tweak what you’re using.

Mecca outlined that as your complexion ages, it gets drier and loses elasticity – which can mean product sits in your fine lines more easily and looks ‘cakey’.

‘The solve? Opting for a luminous, hydrating formula with a natural finish,’ they said.

Ellie Faas’s Skin Veil Foundation ($108) is great in this regard, and has long been popular with brides wanting sheer buildable coverage.

Those who have tried the product have left rave reviews, saying it gives a ‘super smooth look and stays on all day’ and is the ‘best foundation for dry and mature skin’.

‘I’ve always loved a med/full coverage foundation, however as I headed into my early 40s, I needed to re-think my foundation,’ one woman wrote.

‘One of the Mecca staff raved about this and said all the make up artists use it for weddings etc.. I am now on my fifth bottle and I love it. It looks like skin, doesn’t set in fine lines and extremely hydrating (but not slippery).’

IN YOUR SIXTIES AND BEYOND

Finally, in your sixties and beyond, you're going to want something that is not full in coverage but also not too light, particularly if you need to cover up anything from redness to hyperpigmentation and sun damage (Kevyn Aucoin pictured)

Kevyn Aucoin The Etherealist Skin Illuminating Foundation, $96

Finally, in your sixties and beyond, you’re going to want something that is not full in coverage but also not too light, particularly if you need to cover up anything from redness to hyperpigmentation and sun damage.

‘With thinning skin demanding hydrating, glowy coverage, Kevyn Aucoin’s foundation strikes the perfect balance,’ Mecca said.

Its ‘ultra-fine pearl pigments’ reflect the light to give a flattering airbrushed effect, while the inclusion of hyaluronic acid means your skin is staying hydrated at the same time as covered.

Again, the foundation has rave reviews, with one woman writing ‘cannot hype this up enough’.

‘I feel like after years of searching I’ve finally found the perfect foundation,’ another said.

‘I’m 41 so find heavier foundations really aging. This one melts into my skin and shaves years off me. It’s like I’ve been perfectly airbrushed but not cakey. Like magic. HIGHLY recommend!!’
