With Tom Brady on the verge of free agency or retirement, the seven-time Super Bowl champion is once again being linked to the Miami Dolphins.

One inside source told Pro Football Talk that such a move is ‘definitely on the table.’

Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains in the concussion protocol for the second time this season ahead of Sunday’s playoff game in Buffalo, prompting speculation that Miami could be in the market for a new quarterback this offseason.

That was the case a year ago following Tagovailoa’s disappointing 2021 season, when the Dolphins made a play for Brady and then-New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton. But those plans were thwarted when former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores filed an anti-discrimination lawsuit against the team and league, igniting an NFL investigation that discovered improper contact between Miami’s front office, the quarterback, and coach.

As a result, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was suspended for tampering, the NFL fined the team $1.5 million, and the club was docked first- and third-round selections in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The 45-year-old divorcee does own a multi-million-dollar property in South Florida, but Miami’s plans for Tagovailoa remain unclear.

On one hand, the southpaw had a career year, tossing for 3,548 yards, 25 touchdowns and just eight interceptions.

But the 24-year-old Alabama product did have a series of concussion scares, leading many to question if he has a long-term future in the NFL.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, for instance, said his concussion history is troubling enough, and his 6-foot-1 frame could leave him exposed to further injury.

‘This is serious stuff,’ Smith said Thursday. ‘And when you consider that, combined with his lack of size, how miniature he is compared to the football players on the field smacking him with their bodies and putting that collision on him… and the fact he is in this situation right now, this is serious.’

Tagovailoa is due $4.7 million in 2023, which is the final year of his rookie deal. The team could afford to keep him as a backup to Brady, but there would also be a trade market for the young quarterback if they were to opt for the former Patriots and Buccaneers star.

Brady, meanwhile, has his own playoff game on Monday night against the visiting Dallas Cowboys. His 8-9 Buccaneers have homefield advantage for the game by virtue of their NFC South title, but this marks his first losing season in his illustrious career, and retirement or a cross-state move might be appealing to the 45-year-old.
