Brock Purdy is hailed after the Niners win NFC West title with the QB 'eerily similar' to Tom Brady

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy has earned comparisons to Tom Brady after leading the 49ers to the NFC West division title. 

The Niners wrapped up the division and booked their spot in the playoffs with a 21-13 road win over archrivals the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football.

It was only Purdy’s second start for San Francisco after Kyle Shanahan had to call on ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ following injuries to both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo this is season. 

However, despite being the last pick of last year’s draft, the 22-year-old has cruised to victories with the Niners, showing confidence and poise. 

His performances have garnered him praise from many across the football landscape with some likening the quarterback to the seven-time Super Bowl winner. 

Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football analyst Michael Smith said: ‘I remember asking Brady about going to play on the road in hostile environments, you know what he said? 

‘He said, “I played at Michigan, this is nothing.” Same as Brock Purdy is talking about playing at Oklahoma helped prepare him for this big stage. 

‘Again, not saying he is Brady but it is eerily reminiscent. It is uncanny the comparison between Brock Purdy in 2022 and Brady back in 2001. There’s the same level of poise and composure. I’ve seen this movie before.’

Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green echoed Michaels’ thoughts in some manner while speaking to the Amazon Prime team at halftime. 

‘I was watching the game last week and I said to some of my friends, “hey fellas, do y’all thinking we’re watching the next Tom Brady?” You know, Tom Brady being a sixth-round pick.

‘Are we watching the next Tom Brady? We don’t quite know that yet, but to see what this guy is doing is absolutely amazing.’

Purdy himself joined the TNF crew postgame, explaining that he foresaw this in his future. The timing though, well, he didn’t have that thought out.

‘I’ve always believed in myself,’ Purdy said. ‘I didn’t know at what point it would come but I envisioned this sort of stuff happening, in terms of leading an NFL team down the road. 

‘I’ve always had that sort of confidence in myself but in terms of the timing I’ve just gave that up to god and trusted in his plan.’ 

There were numerous social media accounts oxidizing the Purdy-Brady comparisons, while others were simply pleased to watch another (thus far) NFL Cinderella story unfold. 

‘I’m sold on Brock Purdy,’ one user wrote. ‘Such a good story even if it’s just this. From last pick to playoffs. And yeah the team is good but he’s balling.’

San Francisco did indeed qualify for the postseason with the 21-13 win at Seattle. The victory over their rival earned them the NFC West crown.

The rookie threw a pair of touchdown passes to George Kittle as San Francisco clinched the divisional title for the first time since 2019. 

Purdy connected on his first 11 pass attempts, including a 28-yard TD to Kittle in the first quarter when the quarterback executed two fakes before hitting his wide open tight end. 

Purdy and Kittle connected again early in the second half as Seattle’s defense blew a coverage and left Kittle open for a 54-yard TD and a 21-3 San Francisco lead. Purdy finished 17 of 26 for 217 yards, joining Aaron Rodgers as the only QBs since at least 1950 to have a passer rating of at least 115 in each of their first two starts.
