Double Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge broke the world record during his fifth Berlin Marathon on Sunday.

Kipchoge – who set the previous world record in Berlin in 2018 with a time of 2:01.39 – managed to cross the line at 2:01:10 on Sunday morning. 

Kipchoge’s fourth victory in Berlin has also seen him equal the achievement of Haile Gebrselassie, who won the race from 2006-2009.

Kipchoge, who will turn 38 in November, did not run in the World Championships in Eugene this summer. 

However, he did take part in the Tokyo Marathon in March – breaking the course record with 2:02:40, which was the fourth fastest time in history. 

As a result, Kipchoge has now won 15 of his 17 career marathons, including two Olympic gold medals and 10 major titles.

Sunday’s race saw Kipchoge bypass last year’s winner Guye Adola and his fellow Ethiopian Andamlak Belihu. 

Kipchoge covered the first 10km of the race in just 28: 23 and then registered a time of 42:32 at the 15km mark. 

Kipchoge continued to push on and clocked a time of 59:51 for the first half of the 26.2 mile course in Berlin.  

It was clear the 37-year-old was on for a record-breaking time and fans were behind him every step of the way.

However, did start to slow down after the final pace setter dropped off at 25km. As a result, he ran the second half of the marathon in 61:18. 

Nevertheless, he finished almost five minutes ahead of his Kenyan compatriot, Mark Korir – who registered a time of 2:05:58.
