US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan is out after three years in the role, the US Embassy and Consulates in Russia said Sunday.
The top American diplomat in Moscow “departed Moscow today” and will be replaced temporarily by Charge d’Affaires Elizabeth Rood, the statement said.
Sullivan, 62, was appointed ambassador to Moscow in December 2019 by then-President Donald Trump.
“Following his departure, he will retire from a career in public service that has spanned four decades and five US presidents,” the embassy’s statement said.
Sullivan was assistant secretary of state under Trump, and held several senior positions in the Justice, Defense and Commerce departments during previous Republican administrations.
His departure comes at a time when relations between the US and Russia are at their lowest point since the Cold War.
The US has introduced sweeping economic sanctions against Moscow and provided substantial military aid to Kyiv Since the launch of the Russian offensive in Ukraine at the end of February.
