Man Utd owners the Glazers 'change position' on selling club as trio eye £5bn takeover

There has been a shift in position by the Glazer family regarding the potential sale of Manchester United, according to reports. A trio of consortia are thought to be circling with a view to submitting a formal bid and the Red Devils’ owners have set the price tag at £5billion.

United fans protested their club’s ownership before the opening game of their Premier League season against Brighton and they are planning to do so again before they face Liverpool next time out.

Broadly, supporters have taken issue with the Glazers’ decision-making and lack of personal investment since they took over in 2003.

While there has been little in the way of realistic signs that a sale could be on the cards in recent years, The Independent claim that there has been a ‘shift’ in the Glazers’ position.

With a £5bn price tag placed on the Red Devils, three consortia are said to be interested.

The huge price paid for Chelsea, thought to be over £4bn, was seemingly enough for the Glazers to sit up and take note after they acquired United for around £800m almost 20 years ago. Recently, a group of Red Devils stars supposedly complained to the board that new boss Erik ten Hag wasn’t being supported in the transfer market.

The Dutchman’s camp are thought to be dismayed at the nature of his first few months in the job, which has seen him given just three new faces to work with despite a wave of departures at the end of last season. His tenure has started in the worst possible fashion with consecutive defeats to Brighton and Brentford leaving them bottom of the Premier League table.

United are currently scrambling for new additions with vacancies still to be filled in midfield and attack. The Red Devils spent months pursuing Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong although the deal now appears on the verge of collapse.

His Barca team-mate, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, is now thought to be in the crosshairs after a host of attacking targets slipped through the net. Casemiro, Joao Felix, Sergino Dest, Matheus Cunha and Christian Pulisic are also believed to be under serious consideration amid a surge of activity at Old Trafford.
