Interior expert on why you should 'avoid curtains and carpets in small rooms'

How to make a small room look bigger:

1. Paint

White is arguably the best colour for a small room. The brightness helps blend together the walls and ceilings which can help remove the boxy feel that small rooms often have.

White is reflective and makes any room feel light and airy, perfect for opening up a small space.

If you do want some colour in the room, you can also create the illusion of height by painting the wall colour up to about 10cm below the ceiling, or up to the bottom of the cornice, then everything above this is painted white.

The extra band of white will visually stretch the ceiling height, making the room appear taller. Deep teal tone looks smart against a crisp white.
