Bird's torpedo dive catches £100,000 prize in HIPA photography contest

Henley Spiers, from Exeter, took the grand prize in the Hipa Nature contest with the underwater action shot. He said of the photo, taken off Noss Island, Shetland: “I tried to display the controlled violence of the scene. These amazing birds hit the water like a torpedo.

“Tragically Shetland’s gannets are in the midst of an avian flu pandemic, which has ripped through their colonies.”

Other winning images included a monochrome portait of an ice-coated bear hunting in snow, taken in -22C Canada.

A shot from above of an orangutan climbing a tree in Borneo, and one of glowing pepalanthus flowers in a Brazilian field, were awarded too.
