Rio Ferdinand insists Tottenham MUST back Antonio Conte in the transfer market this summer… claiming club have no choice but ‘to bet on him’ and labels the Italian as ‘100 per cent the right man for Spurs’

Rio Ferdinand says Tottenham must back Antonio Conte in the transfer market this summer as he heaped praise on the Italian boss.

The north London side went back into the top four after a nervy 1-0 win against Burnley following Harry Kane’s penalty, ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Newcastle on Monday.

Ferdinand believes Tottenham wouldn’t be able to get a better man for the job and they must back him with incomings this summer having been impressed with Conte’s impact at the club.

Speaking on BT Sport ahead of the game against Burnley, the former Manchester United defender said: ‘I think he has done enough to deserve that. He is third in terms of points gained and goals scored since he got here, which tells you the levels he is at.

‘They put in a performance at Liverpool, they’re coming and it showed at Anfield. He wants to see that play out. You have to bet on him.

‘You can’t question this guy in terms of what he can bring, the intensity. Where do they go from here? If you’re not taking Conte, who is in the market better equipped? Nobody. Conte is the man 100 per cent for Spurs.’

Following a poor start to the season, Tottenham’s season took a turn for the better following Conte’s arrival.

They sat in ninth prior to his appointment in November but 16 wins from 27 games has seen them climb up into fourth with one game left to play for them.

In a recent interview, Conte reiterated the need for Champions League football next season.

He said: ‘In my mind, in my heart and my thoughts, there is the will and desire to win the Champions League. Champions League changes the life of the club, the players and the fans, it would be important and then I will try to make a plan.

‘I want to repay this club in the best possible way, about the commitment they showed me in these 7 months, then we will see and find the best solution for the club.’

A win against Norwich on the final day of the season on Sunday will be enough for Tottenham to secure a top-four spot, providing their north London rivals slip up against Newcastle or Everton.
