Jurgen Klopp: I had faith Liverpool would challenge for the title even when we were 14 points behind

Jurgen Klopp insists he always had faith his Liverpool ‘mentality monsters’ would challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title – even when they were 14 points behind in January

  • Jurgen Klopp was not worried even when his Liverpool side were 14 points back
  • The Reds are now just one point behind Premier League leaders Manchester City
  • Liverpool head to the Etihad on Sunday for a potentially title-defining showdown

Jurgen Klopp never doubted his mentality monsters would continue fighting for the title even when they trailed Manchester City by 14 points in mid-January.

Liverpool have won 10 Premier League games in a row to close the gap to City to one point ahead of Sunday’s clash at The Etihad.

‘If we hadn’t have tried, I would have been disappointed. Whatever situation comes in January, you work from there and don’t suffer because of it.

‘If the gap is too big, then close it. We won the games, City didn’t win all their games and that made the gap smaller. I expected us to really go for it, to try constantly.’

Klopp says the secret is the tried and trusted formula of not looking further ahead than the next fixture.

‘It only works if you go game by game by game,’ he says. ‘There’s no other choice with our programme. We educated ourselves and I’m happy about that.’

Klopp first labelled his players ‘mentality monsters’ after they came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 in the epic 2019 title race.

On that occasion, Liverpool finished second to City on 98 points despite winning their last nine matches, but this time the title is in their own hands if they can pull off a first Premier League win at The Etihad since 2015.
