Maison Jar, in Brooklyn, Follows the Lead of French Packaging-Free Stores

When Larasati Vitoux, who is from Orléans, France, returned there a few years ago she was struck by the number of packaging-free stores, or épiceries en vracs. Seeing a need in New York, where she lives, she has opened Maison Jar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Just about everything is sold in bulk, by weight and self-service, so customers bring their own containers. (Customers can purchase jars.) This “refillery,” as Ms. Vitoux calls it, stocks food products, cleaning supplies and other essentials, many dispensed from silos. Breads from sources like She Wolf, fresh produce, and soon, cheeses cut to order will also available. In keeping with her eco-friendly philosophy, many of the products are organic.

Maison Jar, 566 Leonard Street (Nassau Avenue), Greenpoint, Brooklyn, 347-599-0046, maisonjar.nyc.
