Kevin Sheehan had just 10 minutes to catch the Blue Angels flying over New York City. The entire story, from assignment to completion, took the reporter a head-spinning 30 minutes. In this episode of “Urban Legend,” he looks back at this rapid-fire assignment from April 2020. “Maybe it was for security reasons that they kept it quiet til the last minute,” he says.
Sheehan rushed to Gantry Plaza State Park in Queens to find out if New Yorkers would gather at this early stage of the pandemic. Turns out, they were “packing in like sardines” to see the low-flying fighter jets. “This was a cool thing to see. They got down close enough that you could actually see the planes,” he says. It was all part of Operation American Strong, which began in the Big Apple and ended in Texas, to honor coronavirus first responders and frontline workers.
