In a statement on social media, Lingard disputed Rangnick’s version of events and insisted: “The club advised me to have time off due to personal reasons! But my headspace is clear and I’ll always be professional when called upon and give 100 per cent.”
Unfortunately for Rangnick, this isn’t the first time that he’s been challenged during his brief reign.
Prior to Anthony Martial’s temporary move to Sevilla last month, the ostracised striker rejected Rangnick’s claim that he’d refused to play for the club.
Regardless of who is telling the truth in either instance, it’s becoming apparent that United’s problems haven’t subsided with the departure of Solskjaer.
For all the criticism that was levelled at him for how he dealt with players during his time at Old Trafford, Rangnick has fared no better attempting to handle the plethora of egos inside the United dressing room.
